About N. Idaho AHEC

Mission

Develop and sustain partnerships and programs that enhance health care access and delivery in Idaho’s ten northernmost counties, with a focus on primary and preventative care for rural and underserved populations.

Vision

Lead innovative programs in North Idaho that connect students to health careers, empower health professionals to serve rural and underserved communities, and enhance the overall health and well-being of these communities.

Values

  • Collaborative partnerships among academic institutions, regional health workforce, and the community
  • Innovative programs and services that are interprofessional and community-centered
  • Data that informs and influences decisions
  • A skilled health workforce that mirrors the diversity of the region

Our Objectives

Established in 2017, the North Idaho AHEC focuses on three objectives.

  1. Connecting Students to Health Careers. We partner with regional schools and community organizations to inspire interest in health professions through hands-on, innovative programs like ‘Hands-On Health Care’, ‘Doc for a Day’, and ‘AHEC of a Class’. For current health profession students, we offer opportunities to explore rural and underserved communities, participate in interprofessional training, and develop their skills through initiatives such as the ‘AHEC Scholars Program’.
  2. Connecting Health Professionals to Communities. We deliver accredited continuing education programs that drive innovation and collaboration between community and academic partners. By building a network for health professionals to exchange expertise and resources, we strengthen the quality of care in communities across the region.
  3. Connecting Communities to Better Health.By responding to local health needs, we act as a critical bridge between academic institutions and community outreach programs, ensuring that communities have access to the resources and knowledge they need for improved health outcomes.

Service Area

The North Idaho AHEC serves 10 counties: Boundary, Bonner, Kootenai, Benewah, Shoshone, Latah, Clearwater, Nez Perce, Lewis and Idaho. Our boundaries align with Idaho Public Health Districts 1 (Panhandle) and 2 (North Central).
