Climbing Center FAQ

Open Climbing

Yes, you can! The U of I Climbing Center is open to the public, in addition to U of I students.

Full-time U of I students can access the Climbing Center at no additional cost. Anyone that is not a current full-time U of I student may purchase a day pass or climbing center membership on either a one-month, four-month or one-year increment. A comprehensive list of membership options and pricing can be found here.

Private instruction is available upon request at a cost of $50/hr with a minimum of 48-hour notice and a maximum of two participants.

All patrons must have a valid VandalCard in order to get an SRC Membership. VandalCards can be purchased at the SRC Information Desk for $10. Memberships are non-transferable and non-refundable.

You are not required to wear a helmet, but helmets are available to rent for free at the Climbing Center.

You do not have to wear specific climbing shoes, but non-marking athletic shoes are recommended if you are not using climbing shoes. Close-toed shoes are required at all times.

Open chalk is not allowed in order to maintain the HVAC system and cleaning requirements in the facility.

A waiver is signed each time a new pass is purchased. This includes single visits, 1-month, 4-month and 1-year passes.

Clinics

Yes, everyone must pass a basics clinic (even if you are just bouldering). The basics clinic consists of learning how to tie the figure 8 follow through knot, belay using a manual braking belay device and cover proper communications between climbers and belayers. Prices are $10 for UI students and $15 for non-U of I participants.

Basics Clinics are offered 6-8 p.m. each Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday during the academic year.

Check out all the clinic times.

Basic clinics in the summer are available at 5 p.m. every Monday through Wednesday. On-demand basic clinics may be available for individuals or small groups during the summer, but are not guaranteed, especially during peak hours of operation. Our Monday-Wednesday basics clinics are highly recommended if you would like to guarantee availability in the summer.

A U of I Climbing Center Basics Clinic or an introductory skills assessment with an approved staff member is required before you can climb.

Typically, clinics are around 45 minutes with another 45 minutes of practice and testing time.

Only during Summer Open Hours, during the school year clinics are only held during the scheduled times.

If the climbing center is not busy (discretion of the front desk staff), then they can teach the clinic.

No, the climbing center staff can run through a check off on the skills and mark you off in our system for free.

No, if your friend wants to lead climb, they must take the Intro to lead climbing clinic. $10 for Students, and $15 for non-U of I students. These are generally held on the second and fourth Wednesdays of the month during the academic year.

Yes! We also offer intro to aerial arts clinics, anchor building, sport climbing basics and others. Check the climbing center schedule for rotating clinics.

Youth Climbing

We try to accommodate the overall University of Idaho climbing community and have set aside hours for each group in a balanced offering of times.

No, they cannot. Friends are not recognized as legal guardians.

Everyone coming into the climbing center needs to go through our facility orientation (video and safety checklist), but only parents are required to take the basics clinic. Children 14 years old and older may also take the basics clinic.

No. Parents or guardians must always be with youth climbers.

We teach basics clinics during open youth hours.

We have children as young as 3 years old climb. We do provide a limited number of full body harnesses.

You must be at least 14 years old to belay.

We do not have a minimum height. Minimum weight is 40lbs for climbers using our auto-belays.

Yes you can! Please fill out our Group Reservation Request Form, and we’ll get back to you about setting up the time.

  • Groups of 1-10 participants (Excluding parent belayers): $100
  • Each additional participant is $10.

During climbing center youth open hours, groups larger than 12 people will be turned away without a reservation due to additional staffing needs.

Our top priority is your safety and an enjoyable experience. All climbers and belayers in the U of I climbing wall over the age of 18 must take a basics clinic or pass a ‘belay check off', have a facility orientation and sign a waiver. Even if you are only belaying for one hour and not even climbing yourself. The only exception to this are group reservations where a climbing center employee is present and helping to facilitate the specific group. We recommend planning ahead and getting a basics clinic out of the way the one time, and then you never have to do the clinic again unless you want to. Our mission is to teach future climbers the fundamentals of climbing, and this is one way we facilitate a safe and enjoyable climbing experience. Even if you are not belaying your child and they only boulder, you must know how to belay if you are in the facility. This prevents future confusion and possible accidents. It is up to the discretion of the staff if spectators (i.e. grandparents taking photos) are allowed in, depending on capacity limits of the facility. These people will not be charged entry but are required to sign a waiver. If a spectator is found to be climbing, they will be asked to leave immediately. No matter what, there must be at least one adult with the minor(s) who is approved to belay, even if there is no roped climbing happening.

If you are with a minor and only belaying, you must pay $10 for entry. Your harness rental is included with the $10. The minor’s $10 entry fee includes rental of harness and climbing shoes. This means $20 covers both of your day passes, two harness rentals and one climbing shoe rental.

Rentals

Yes! We have shoes, harnesses, belay devices and safety equipment available.

Harness & Belay Device | $4.

Shoes | $4.

Culture

Whatever is comfortable and does not have offensive slogans, images or content. Shirts must be always worn.

No. Screaming and swearing are not tolerated in the climbing center.
