20th Anniversary Issue

We are constructing Fugue’s 20th anniversary issue in the form of a regionally based issue.  Bruce Barcott said, “We created the northwest with words,” but we are adding that it is this region, which causes writers to write.   This latter thought is what we are developing our anniversary issue around – the writers of the west, but more specifically the insiders, the born, the original settlers versus the outsiders, the migrators, the transplants, the carpetbaggers.  What causes the insiders to stay here and write about this place, and what causes the outsiders to come to this place to write?

We are soliciting works from writers, and we will also have a general call for papers from “unknown” writers.  The pieces should reflect this idea of the power or the mystery of the west – either through poetry, fiction or nonfiction – and consider the idea of insider versus outsider; born to a place versus adopting a land.

We are invested in creating a powerful issue and we believe including a piece by you would only strengthen the meaning we are working to define.  We value your contribution to this issue to promote the MFA program, the University of Idaho, and western writing.  We appreciate any piece you care to include.

The submission due date is January 1, 2010.

When you submit via e-mail, please type “Regional” in the subject line AND be sure to follow the general submission guidelines as described below.

All other submissions will be considered for our summer/fall 2010 issue. Thanks for your continued support.

General Submission Guidelines

Submissions are accepted September 1 through May 1 (Online submissions only). All material received outside of this period will be unread. Please address submissions to the appropriate genre and send to the correct e-mail address:

fugue-prosesubmitATuidahoDOTedu or fugue-poetrysubmitATuidahoDOTedu.

Paste your name, contact information, and a short bio along with your work into the body of your email AND as an attachment. If you only send an attachment, we will not consider your work and you’ll receive a note saying as much.

All contributors receive payment and two complimentary copies of the journal. Please send no more than five poems, two short-shorts, one story, or one essay at a time.

Submissions in more than one genre should be submitted separately. We will consider simultaneous submissions (submissions that have been sent concurrently to another journal), but we will not consider multiple submissions. All multiple submissions will be returned unread. Once you have submitted a piece to us, wait for a response on this piece before submitting again.
