About Fraternity and Sorority Life at U of I

Developing meaningful relationships and creating connection with an impactful community can help you be more successful throughout your undergraduate career. Fraternities and sororities have been part of campus life since U of I was founded in 1889. Today, roughly a quarter of all students join one of these organizations to discover a community of peers who share similar values, create strong friendships and make a difference in the university and Moscow communities.

Fraternity and Sorority Life at U of I includes 34 Greek-letter organizations that belong to the Multicultural Greek Council, Interfraternity Council and Panhellenic Council. All understand the unique value that can come from a sisterhood of women or a brotherhood of men navigating the challenges of the undergraduate experience together. The community, opportunity and growth offered through membership in Fraternity and Sorority Life is something that can’t be matched.

Even though there are hundreds of opportunities for you to engage and get involved with on campus, few produce a lifelong return on time and energy quite like joining a Greek chapter. The Office of Fraternity and Sorority Life invites you to join us and discover where you belong here on campus. Learn more about all Greek organizations and chapters at U of I.

Once immersed in Fraternity and Sorority Life at U of I, you’re encouraged to do your best academically, develop strong social and community bonds, empower others and lead with belonging in mind. Read more about the missions and values of U of I’s Greek organizations.

The Benefits of Joining a Greek Chapter

Fraternity and Sorority Life will shape your time at U of I. The friendships you develop will create meaningful connections in your life and double as an important network as you start your career. From community to academics to personal development, there are many benefits of joining a fraternity or sorority as you begin your journey as a Vandal:

  • Discover a supportive environment: Coming to college can be both exciting and nerve-wracking. Having a likeminded community by your side can help you navigate the social and academic transition to college life. With the advice and perspectives of your chapter’s members, you can grow your network, participate in events, build your confidence and ultimately find your home away from home.
  • Branch out and lead: Broaden your connections and see how your brotherly or sisterly bonds can have far-reaching effects. U of I’s Greek organizations are involved with on-campus groups and events, community service and other philanthropic efforts. Engage in meaningful teamwork while cultivating your leadership and organizational skills in the process.
  • Reach your potential: Studies have shown that graduation rates are higher for fraternity and sorority members than the general college population. Your chapter is highly invested in your academic success, providing scholarships and other incentives like tutoring and study support to keep you on track.
  • Expand your network: Connections from your fraternity or sorority extend beyond campus to U of I alumni and national chapter members. Being part of a Greek organization gives you a boost as you enter the working world, where you can leverage your community to land internships or your first full-time job. After graduating, you’ll be able to provide recommendations from your own network and give others a head start on their future.
