Swim Center

The Swim Center has a premiere reputation in the Inland Northwest as a facility that serves many students, faculty, staff and the community at large with the goal of providing a safe environment for healthy lifestyles through aquatics.

It has two 25-yard pools, an eight-lane, 25-yard competitive pool and a four-lane, 25-yard shallow, warm-up/teaching pool. The competitive pool also has a one-meter and a three-meter diving board. The 33,839 square foot facility supports academic classes, swim competitions, swim lessons general fitness and recreation, U of I’s Department of Movement Sciences, U of I’s ROTC programs and is “home” for the Vandal women’s swimming and diving team programs.

Main Swim Center Activities:

  • Academic and recreational classes
  • Competition swim and dive meets
  • U of I women’s swimming and diving teams’ practices
  • Idaho Public School Districts and local area youth and adult swim practices
  • Community individual and group swim lessons
  • American Red Cross training and certification courses
  • Year-round recreational swimming for U of I community and general public

Building History

Built in 1970 along side the university’s Physical Education Building (PEB), the Swim Center has always been a vibrant facility serving diverse user groups, university and community-wide. Since its original construction, the facility has gone through several renovations to keep it up-to-date structurally, allowing it to continue to meet the needs of the university and its users.

The Swim Center’s most recent renovation occurred in summer 2017—with a $1 million tile and gutter restoration and pool deck tile replacement. Other past facility upgrades included the addition of two diving boards in 2008 to accommodate the new women’s diving team; a locker room renovation in 2009; and air and water filtration systems upgrades, starting block replacements and new wall tile and windows installation over the years.
