Melissa Beals — Gwangju, South Korea (Academic Year 2023-2024)
My favorite part about studying abroad was meeting friends from both Korea and around the world, and the opportunity to travel around Korea and practice the language with locals.
Don’t regret a normal day abroad. The small, normal, “everyday” experiences can end up being some of your greatest memories. Don’t rush around trying to do and see all the big stuff and miss the little things like taking a walk along a new street, talking to a local at a market or trying a new food.
I received the Freeman-ASIA, the Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship, U of I CLASS scholarships and the International Experience Grant, and scholarships through my program provider, USAC.
Having so much scholarship funding allowed me to visit local cafes or restaurants literally every day and practice my Korean in a natural setting! I also traveled around Korea a lot, and I got to see so many neat places and have incredible experiences that wouldn’t have been possible otherwise. Even something as simple as allowing myself to “get lost” around the city and not worry about paying for a taxi back to campus gave me inspiration to just go out and try new things! Looking back, I know that I lived my study abroad experience to the fullest and a huge part was that I wasn’t concerned about finances the whole time.

I received the Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship plus Critical Need Language Award, Fund for Education Abroad and Idaho First-Generation Global Fellowship.
Rim Tekle — San Jose, Costa Rica (Summer 2024)
The most rewarding part of my study abroad experience was discovering the diverse towns of Costa Rica, such as La Fortuna, each revealing its unique culture and showcasing the country’s stunning natural beauty.
In addition to scheduling an appointment with the IPO to help you with the process, I strongly advise anybody who is even somewhat interested in studying abroad to begin researching programs that they might be able to apply to. It will be easier and less stressful if you give yourself enough time to start the study abroad and scholarship-searching process. Finally, this is a once-in-a-lifetime chance to meet individuals from all over the world and go to any place in the world of your choosing.
I got the Benjamin A. Gillman International Scholarship, the Idaho First-Generation Global Fellowship, as well as scholarships from various U of I departments including College of Science, the TRIO mentoring scholarship and the Office of Multicultural Affairs scholarship.
My study abroad experience was made more affordable and less financially demanding due to the scholarships. They paid for a significant portion of my expenses, including living and travel fees, so I was able to focus on integrating into the new culture and taking advantage of the academic possibilities without worrying about money all the time. Scholarship funding also allowed me greater flexibility to take part in cultural activities and trips, which enhanced my whole experience.
