Graduate degree program categories

When considering graduate school, you’ll choose between two main types of degrees: research and professional.

If you’re interested in conducting original research and contributing new knowledge to your field, a research degree like a Master of Science (M.S.) or Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) might be the right fit. If you’re looking to build practical skills and advance your career in a specific profession, a professional degree like a Master of Business Administration (M.B.A.) or Master of Education (M.Ed.) is designed for that purpose.

Other ways to learn

4 + 1 Master’s Program

U of I offers a  4+1 Master’s Program that allows undergraduates to earn a non-thesis master’s degree in a field related to their undergraduate major in just one additional year. This accelerated path gives students the opportunity to gain advanced knowledge and skills, enhancing their career prospects while saving time and tuition costs.
