Internships

The Bleak and DeVlieg Internships at Taylor Wilderness Research Station offer exciting educational opportunities and provide a transformative wilderness experience. You will learn valuable skills to help prepare you for work or graduate school.

The Internship gives undergraduate students hands-on experience in a breadth of natural resources research, management, and field techniques. Contact Taylor Wilderness Research Station for more information.

Educational Opportunities

Working with a faculty mentor, you will develop an individual research project or participate in a long-term monitoring project. As an intern you will expand your knowledge of wilderness areas and gain extensive field experience. You will learn from faculty who provide short courses covering topics such as wilderness ethics and management, historical and cultural aspects of the area, statistics, vegetation and restoration ecology and ethnobotany. You will also have an opportunity to interact with scientists and professionals from a variety of disciplines.

Components of the Internship

  • Conduct field research
  • Use field techniques
  • Participate in visiting faculty workshops
  • Assist ongoing research at TWRS
  • Hike and backpack
  • Assist fellow interns and scientists

TWRS internships are open to upcoming juniors, seniors and returning senior-level University of Idaho students. Interns must be resourceful, self-motivated, enjoy the physical work associated with field research in a remote setting and have enthusiasm for the work involved in field station residence and facility maintenance. Interns must be able to work independently, with others, and while following the direction of faculty mentors or station managers.

Interns must be capable of backcountry trail and off-trail hiking.

Term and Salary

Interns will live and work at the station for ten weeks under the supervision of faculty mentors and field station managers. Interns will earn $3,000 for the 10-week period. The internship will also pay for the required summer internship credit. Lodging at the station and one round-trip plane flight from Cascade to Taylor Ranch are provided. Interns are responsible for supplying their own food.
