What is AHEC?

The Area Health Education Center (AHEC) program is a national network of over 300 centers working to expand access to and deliver quality health care, especially in underserved and rural areas. By connecting medical education opportunities with regional health care needs, AHEC programs help create healthier communities and positively impact individual lives.

Hands-on health care

NI-AHEC further promotes medical education. Explore how the program influences K-12 students through practical workshops and learning experiences.

Our AHEC in North Idaho

The North Idaho Area Health Education Center, established in 2017, is one of three AHECs in Idaho. Housed on University of Idaho’s campus in Moscow by the School of Health and Medical Professions (SHAMP), NI-AHEC trains Idaho’s future physicians and health care professionals by focusing on the unique medical challenges of Idaho’s communities.

University of Idaho has been at the forefront of health care education since 1972, when our partnership with the University of Washington School of Medicine began. This commitment to rural health care and forgotten populations makes U of I the ideal home for NI-AHEC. And it’s an added benefit for all students in a U of I medical or health care program.
