Hazardous Waste Management Workshop
Federal and state laws present a complex and strict legal framework for managing hazardous waste. Procedures and training have been developed to assist the university community in understanding and complying with these requirements. Many university activities, including research, teaching, maintenance and office operations, have the potential to generate a hazardous waste. Managing these wastes in a safe, environmentally acceptable and legal manner is an expectation of all employees and students. This workshop will provide information on:
- Identifying and characterizing hazardous wastes;
- Managing hazardous waste in the laboratory or other workspace;
- Waste collection procedures;
- Emergency response; and
- Waste minimization practices.
The information complements specific procedures that can be found on the Environmental Health and Safety (EHS) website. This course is presented by EHS staff and is required of all employees and students who may generate or manage hazardous waste at any University of Idaho location. After completion of the initial class, this requirement must be met once every five (5) years.
