Used Oil Management

What we do to manage used oil

Environmental Health and Safety collects and recycles used oil that is not contaminated with hazardous waste. Used oil that contains excessive levels of halogenated compounds such as from chlorinated brake cleaners, or solvents or toxic constituents may have to be managed as a hazardous waste. Depending on the quantities that you generate in a given period of time, EHS will provide a 30-gallon steel drum or smaller container to collect the used oil. Once the container is full, the generator submits a Chemical Waste Collection Request and EHS picks up the container within a week.

How you can help

Collect used oil only in containers that are marked "USED OIL." Avoid adding spent solvents or other toxic materials to the container. Store the used oil containers on spill pallets in an area protected from the weather. Keep the container closed except when adding more used oil. Do not store more than 55 gallons at any one time.
