Master of Science in Kinesiology and Leisure Sciences (M.S. KLS)

The Master of Science in Kinesiology and Leisure Sciences (M.S. KLS) program at the University of Idaho is designed to provide a flexible, comprehensive pathway for individuals aiming to advance their careers in fitness, health, sports management, dance and recreation leadership. Offering fully online options and accelerated completion pathways, this graduate program equips students with the skills and expertise needed to excel in diverse Kinesiology and Leisure Science (KLS) fields.

Students can specialize in one of three areas. The Exercise, Sport, and Health Sciences specialization focuses on the science behind exercise physiology, sport psychology, and the impact of physical activity on health. The Recreation, Sport, and Tourism Management specialization prepares students to become leaders in recreation management, sports tourism, and other related fields. The Physical Activity and Dance Pedagogy specialization emphasizes the art and science of teaching physical movement and dance, ideal for those pursuing careers in physical education or dance instruction.

The program’s flexible format allows for 100% online completion, making it accessible to working professionals and students seeking a remote learning option. For those eager to fast-track their studies, the M.S. KLS can be completed in as little as one year. Additionally, the 4+1 Accelerated Degree Program enables qualified Idaho undergraduates to earn both their bachelor’s and master’s degrees in five years, saving time and tuition costs.

The M.S. KLS program is designed for a wide range of professionals, including future fitness professionals, sports coaches, recreation managers, and health educators. By combining hands-on learning with academic rigor, the program prepares students to apply theoretical knowledge in practical settings. Research opportunities are available in the university’s Exercise Physiology and Biomechanics laboratories, and students benefit from close interaction with faculty due to the program’s low student-to-faculty ratio.

For those looking to enter or advance in the fitness industry, the program offers practical experience and a curriculum that covers essential topics such as exercise physiology, sport psychology, and the connections between physical fitness and overall health. The University of Idaho’s cutting-edge fitness facilities provide a rich learning environment, while students are encouraged to engage in fitness research and physical activity studies that drive the industry forward. Graduates will also gain a deep understanding of leadership, marketing, and ethical practices in sports management and health promotion.

To accommodate diverse career goals, students can choose between thesis and non-thesis options, allowing them to pursue either a research-focused pathway or a more practical, career-oriented track. Whether students opt to complete the program in one year or at a slower pace, the M.S. KLS program’s flexible structure ensures that you can tailor your educational experience to fit your personal and professional objectives.

Additionally, students from participating states can benefit from the Western Regional Graduate Program (WRGP), which provides out-of-state students the opportunity to qualify for in-state tuition rates. This makes the M.S. KLS an affordable choice for those seeking a graduate degree in kinesiology, sports management, or recreation leadership.

Admission to the program requires securing a faculty advisor from the Movement Sciences (MVSC) department as a major professor before submitting an application. With flexible study plans, personalized mentorship, and a focus on applied kinesiology and sports leadership, the M.S. KLS program offers a comprehensive and affordable route to professional advancement in the fields of health, fitness, dance, sports, and recreation.
