Gardening
Gardening in Boundary County can be rewarding, but there can be some challenges. The USDA hardiness zones range from 4 at higher elevations to 6 at lower elevations. The average frost free period ranges from mid-May to mid-September. The short growing season and cool nights can hinder plant growth, but with the proper plant selection and gardening techniques, gardens can flourish.
To learn more about short season gardening, see UI Extension’s Short-Season, High-Altitude Gardening resources.
Horticulture programs are generally offered in the spring. Contact the UI Extension, Boundary County office at 208-267-3235 for program information.
