Mario E. de Haro-Martí is a professor and Extension educator in Gooding County. He provides multi-county environmental management education and applied research in his areas of specialization, including livestock waste and nutrient management, air and water quality, livestock production sustainability, agricultural pollution prevention, dairy production and bilingual training of the dairy workforce. Mario’s applied research and education programs include dairy composting improvement, vermicomposting, reduction of air emissions from livestock operations, nutrient and manure management, and helping livestock producers to increase production efficiencies while reducing their environmental impact. He has worked with the University of Idaho Extension since summer 2007.
Mario earned a bachelor’s in environmental studies from the National University of Comahue, Neuquén, Argentina, and a master’s and doctorate in environmental science from the University of Idaho. In Argentina, after graduating from high school as a chemist technician, he worked as a lab technician in the food industry while starting his studies as a commercial airplane pilot. He attended the university for his bachelor’s while taking advanced aviation courses. He worked as a commercial airplane pilot, flight instructor, and part-time high school substitute teacher for several years. Later, he worked as an industrial occupational health and safety, and environmental compliance consultant for diverse industries, including South America’s largest natural gas field. Immediately after obtaining his master’s at the University of Idaho, he started his job as an Extension educator, pursuing his doctorate while working on serving Idaho’s dairy, livestock, and associated industries and the communities in Gooding County and the Magic Valley.
His applied research includes quantifying and reducing air emissions from manure treatments, improving dairy composting processes and quality, nutrient management and use of manure, sustainability of dairy production, dairy cow and calf feeding, health and nutrient excretion, cover crops and corn silage. His University of Idaho Extension programs cover a wide array of topics, including manure and nutrient management, composting at the farm and at home, vermicomposting, urban and agricultural recycling, cover crops, community garden, bilingual dairy farm worker’s training in farm safety, immunization, milking, dairy management and many other topics requested by dairy producers and their workers.
