The Clearwater Russet is a russet-skinned potato variety developed by the Pacific Northwest Variety Development Program that was released in 2008. Its excellent processing quality helped to popularize it for regional growers, but McDonald's helped its renown go national by adopting it in 2016 for use in making French fries (one of three russets the fast-food chain relies on). Growers in the Pacific Northwest and elsewhere will benefit from learning more about how to manage production of the well-liked variety in this useful bulletin, including best practices for nutrients, irrigation, pest, harvest and storage considerations, plus disease response and planting tips.
