Idaho Law Review Symposium 2021
Incarcerating the Masses: A Critical Examination of America’s Prison Problem
Presented by the Idaho Law Review
Mass incarceration affects millions of Americans every day. For a country that holds only 5% of the world’s population, we hold almost 25% of the world’s total prisoners. Prison Policy Institute reports that Idaho has one of the highest incarceration rates in the nation (and that massive racial disparities exist in Idaho’s prison population). In the past 50 years, the nationwide prison population has increased 700%, disproportionately affecting different races, genders, and classes.
Join us as we walk through the American criminal process, from charging decisions to serving sentences, and ask: where did we go so wrong and how do we correct course?
