After graduating from law school at UC Berkeley, Karen was an associate in Shearman & Sterling's San Francisco office. She then worked in securities enforcement at the US Securities and Exchange Commission in Washington, DC, and San Francisco, where she became Deputy Assistant District Administrator, and the Pacific Exchange, where she was Managing Director. Karen stepped away from the practice of law while her children were small. She then transitioned to legal publishing where she spent a decade collaborating with law school faculty about curriculum and pedagogy to develop print and digital resources to support student success in law school and on bar exams. During this time, Karen taught Legal Writing & Analysis for LL.M. students at Berkeley.
Professor Wellman recognizes that students have individual needs to reach their full potential and she looks forward to supporting all students to ensure they have the tools to be successful in law school, on the bar exam, and as a practicing attorney.
Starting before law school, Karen has done pro bono immigration work including IRCA legalization applications, pro bono applications, and relief for withholding of deportation.
Outside of work, her passion is rowing and she hopes to be on the Snake River in the spring and to continue her quest to become a US Rowing referee. Karen has two adult children who live in Bellingham, WA, and Oakland, CA. She will be in search of a dog to adopt once she is settled.
