More Than 1,100 Students To Graduate This Spring

MOSCOW, Idaho — May 9, 2022 — More than 1,166 University of Idaho students applied for 1,674 degrees for the spring semester, which ends Friday, May 13.

Graduates from Fall 2021 are invited to join the spring ceremony, resulting in more than 1,700 Vandals receiving over 2,262 degrees during the 2022-23 academic year.

“This is the culmination of hard work and determination, but also perseverance in challenging times,” said Scott Green, president of the U of I. “Our graduates, despite everything they have been through, are ready to hit the workforce and lead their industries.”

Of the 1,166 students who have applied to graduate, 1,059 earned bachelor’s degrees, 282 earned master’s degrees, 66 earned doctoral degrees and 157 earned their juris doctorates. Another 96 are receiving academic certificates and five specialists.

Graduation numbers released now are provisional. Students have until midnight Saturday, May 14, to apply for graduation.

Former State Board of Education President Emma Atchley will receive an honorary doctorate at the Moscow ceremonies. Atchley, who received a bachelor’s in English from U of I in 1970, was also the director of Bank of Idaho and operates the Flying A Ranch in Ashton, where she is involved in raising potatoes, cattle, hay, wheat and canola.

Two commencement ceremonies will be held May 14 at the ASUI-Kibbie Activity Center on the Moscow campus. Here’s the schedule:

• 9:30 a.m.: Colleges of Art and Architecture; Education Health and Human Sciences; Law; and Letters Arts and Social Sciences.
• 2 p.m.: Colleges of Agricultural and Life Sciences; Business and Economics; Engineering; Natural Resources; and Science.

U of I Boise commencement begins 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, May 17, at the Boise Centre (850 W Front St.). U of I Idaho Falls will host its ceremony 7 p.m. Wednesday, May 18.

Speakers

Moscow: Former Seattle Times Executive Editor Don Shelton will deliver the commencement address in Moscow. Shelton, who graduated from Fruitland High School and earned a bachelor’s in journalism from U of I in 1976, serves as a graduate advisor for Idaho’s Phi Gamma Delta (Fiji) chapter, is a member of the U of I School of Journalism and Mass Media’s advisory board since 2015, and teaches journalism courses at U of I.

Boise: Luis Cortes Romero, managing partner in Novo Legal Group’s Washington Office who exclusively practices in immigration litigation, will deliver Boise’s U of I commencement address. He graduated from U of I’s College of Law in 2013. Cortes Romero, a DACA recipient, was co-counsel in the landmark DHS v. Regents of the University of California case which resulted in the Supreme Court striking down the Trump administration’s 2017 decision to end the DACA program. Cortes Romero is an adjunct professor of law with the University of Minnesota Law School and board member of the National Immigration Project.

Idaho Falls: The Director of the Cybercore Integration Center at Idaho National Laboratory, Scott Cramer, will deliver U of I’s commencement address in Idaho Falls. Cramer leads the center that leverage’s the lab’s internationally recognized cybersecurity capabilities and assembles integrated teams of all-source intelligence analysts, cyber engineers and researchers, as well as control systems subject matter experts. Cramer worked for 26 years at the Central Intelligence Agency, retiring in 2014 as National Clandestine Service Executive-Grade Manager.

A breakdown of degrees applied for by U of I centers includes:

• Moscow:1,045 bachelor’s, 55 law, 259 master’s, 49 doctoral, three specialist (1,516 total degrees, 1,014 total students);
• Boise: 12 bachelor’s, 102 law, 16 master’s, two specialist (132 total degrees, 133 total students)
• Idaho Falls: Two bachelor’s, 12 master’s, one doctoral (21 total degrees, 19 total students)
• U of I has graduated about 126,000 students with more than 135,000 degrees since its foundation.
