Over 2,000 Students to Perform in Lionel Hampton Jazz Fest

April 19, 2023

MOSCOW, Idaho — More than 2,000 students — along with educators, parents and jazz lovers — will be in Moscow Wednesday-Saturday, Apr. 19-22 for the 56th Lionel Hampton Jazz Festival at University of Idaho.

Students will compete in three days of performances critiqued by professional musicians. Schools from Idaho, Washington, Oregon, Montana, Utah, Ohio and British Columbia, Canada, will attend. Evening concerts will feature some of today’s top jazz performers and student performers.

The student schedule features 200 K-12 and college student performances. Performances are planned starting at 8 a.m. each day at various campus venues. Find a full schedule online.

More than 50 free workshops open to the public start Thursday, covering a range of topics including hip hop, tap, jazz disco, yoga for musicians, the history of jazz in Germany, the music business and career exploration.

Tickets are available for the evening concerts, which will feature Grammy-award winning performers and the top student soloists competing for a scholarship to U of I, courtesy of Avista.

Tickets to Wednesday evening’s Hamp’s Gala are free. All other ticket events range from $20-$50 and are available online or at the Bruce Pitman Center Box Office. Tickets are available at the door, using credit card only, while supplies last. A clear bag policy is in effect for all events in the ICCU arena, including this year’s festival.
