Registration Open for Free STEM Food Science Summer Camp for Idaho High Schoolers

June 01, 2023

MOSCOW, Idaho — For a second year, University of Idaho is hosting a free food science camp for Idaho high schoolers, called Pizza-ology, July 6-12 in Moscow.

The weeklong camp will immerse students in discussions and activities about sustainable food practices and introduce them to the diversity of careers in food, including agriculture, restaurant management and research.

Camp days will start and end at the Carmelita Spencer Food Laboratory in the Niccolls Building Room 103. Free transportation will be provided for day trips to local restaurants and facilities to learn about the chemistry of food, sustainable agriculture practices and practical science. Free food and lunch will be provided.

“Food science camps, as a hands-on STEM learning experience, are rare. It is even rarer to find one integrating learning experiences from local vendors and restauranteurs,” said William Tai, camp director and doctoral candidate in the College of Education, Health and Human Sciences. “We hope Pizza-ology can provide insight into what it takes to source ingredients for the food that students love, explain the science behind food preparation and promote interactive science camps to get students interested in STEM.”

High school students entering ninth grade, or a higher academic year, may register online for the weeklong camp that runs from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. daily. The deadline to register is Tuesday, June 20.

The camp ends July 12 with a workshop that teaches students how to prepare a pizza for their friends and family.

The camp is funded by the Idaho STEM Action Center.
