Auditorium Chamber Music Series to present Anthony McGill and Gloria Chien Dec. 6

MOSCOW, Idaho — The Auditorium Chamber Music Series presents Grammy-nominated clarinetist Anthony McGill and superior pianist Gloria Chien in concert at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Dec. 6, at the University of Idaho Administration Building Auditorium. Tickets are available at uitickets.com, at the door (card only) and at the Bruce M. Pitman Center box office from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on weekdays. 

McGill enjoys a dynamic solo and chamber music career and is principal clarinet of the New York Philharmonic — the first African American principal player in the organization’s history. Previously, he was the principal clarinet of the Metropolitan Opera. He is the recipient of the 2020 Avery Fisher Prize and was named Musical America’s 2024 Instrumentalist of the Year. “American Stories,” his album with the Pacifica Quartet, was nominated for a Grammy Award, and he has shared the stage with legendary artists such as Itzhak Perlman and Yo-Yo Ma, captivating audiences worldwide.

“Words cannot describe the elation we feel as we anticipate the upcoming performance of Anthony McGill and Gloria Chien this week,” said Eneida Larti, artistic director of ACMS and assistant professor of piano at the Lionel Hampton School of Music. “McGill has achieved what many musicians only dream of — serving as the principal clarinet of the New York Philharmonic.”

Taiwanese-born pianist Chien has one of the most diverse musical lives as a noted performer, concert presenter and educator. She made her orchestral debut at the age of 16 with the Boston Symphony Orchestra. She was subsequently selected by The Boston Globe, which said she “appears to excel in everything,” as one of its Superior Pianists of the year. She is also a frequent performer with the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center.

“I'm thrilled to see these two world-class musicians performing for the first time for our ACMS concert,” ACMS Manager Navin Chettri said. “Witnessing their musical chemistry and 15 years of musical collaboration and friendship come to life during their performance should be a wonderful experience for our students and community members.”

Each of the three upcoming concerts in the ACMS season takes place at 7:30 p.m. in the U of I Administration Building Auditorium on campus in Moscow:

Parker Quartet: Friday, Jan. 24

• Sandbox Percussion: Thursday, March 6

Since 1986, the Auditorium Chamber Music Series has presented some of the world's finest small ensembles in the beautiful neo-Gothic auditorium in the heart of U of I’s campus. Four ensembles visit the Palouse each year, performing for the series and enriching the region through school residencies, informal performances in community venues and master classes.
