About HOIST

Foundation and Early Years

HOIST was established in 1994 as a collaborative initiative between Upward Bound and Idaho EPSCoR (Experimental Program to Stimulate Competitive Research) at the University of Idaho. The program was specifically designed to address the underrepresentation of Native American students in STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) fields.

Initially, HOIST focused on building partnerships with five Tribal Nations in Idaho, creating a network that included schools and community organizations. This collaboration ensured that HOIST was both culturally relevant and aligned with the values and needs of the participating tribes. From the start, the program incorporated tribal values and traditions into its curriculum, maintaining a strong connection to the communities it aimed to serve.

In 2007, the management of HOIST was transferred to the Native American Student Center (NASC) at the University of Idaho. This transition expanded the program's focus to include the 11 U of I Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) Tribal Reservations, further strengthening relationships with tribal communities.

Under NASC’s leadership, they work closely with university researchers, instructors, Native American leaders and community organizations to support and refine HOIST. This collaborative approach ensures that HOIST remains responsive to the educational and cultural needs of its participants.
