Our Mission
The LGBTQA Office provides a safe and welcoming space for students and other members of the university community to explore aspects of sexual orientation and gender identity/expression in an open and non-judgmental atmosphere.
Our vision is for U of I to become a campus that promotes the full inclusion of LGBTQA students, faculty and staff. To this end, we work together to eliminate homophobia, heterosexism and gender identity oppression.
Integrity
We respect and recognize the vast diversity of sexual orientations, gender identities, and gender expressions in our society. We also acknowledge the prevalence of anti-LGBTQA oppression and strive to provide an empowering and safe space for all students.
Transformation
We are committed to creating a more equal and welcoming campus community for LGBTQA and ally students. We recognize the current perceived climate for LGBTQA and ally students, faculty, and staff and are charged to better increase inclusivity and fairness on the University of Idaho campus.
Community
We strive to create an inclusive community and provide support for all students. We acknowledge the vast diversity of the LGBTQA community. We respect the individual identities and stories in order to create an inclusive and rich campus community.
Advocacy
We are committed to the advancement of LGBTQA equity on the University of Idaho campus and in the Moscow community. We pledge to support and advocate for LGBTQA issues and concerns while working to empower students to become agents of social change.
LGBTQA stands for Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer/Questioning, Asexual and Ally.
This acronym represents what has come to be recognized as a standard range of sexual and gender identity-based individuals and groups. We include "A" for "Ally" in recognition of the many people on our campus who support, affirm and advocate for LGBTQ people and causes. We also include "A" to recognize those who identify as asexual or aromatic as part of the LGBTQA community. Increasing numbers of people use the word “Queer” as an umbrella term inclusive of the full spectrum of identities.
An ally to the LGBTQA community is someone who works to support and affirm LGBTQA people while challenging traditional notions of gender and sexuality that are unnecessarily restrictive and oppressive. Allies are welcome in all programs and services offered by the LGBTQA Office.
Safe Zone Program
The Safe Zone Program creates a safe and welcoming environment at U of I for LGBTQA students, faculty and staff by developing and maintaining a network of informed individuals who are willing to be visibly supportive of people on campus who identify as LGBTQA.
Become an Advocate
Allies pledge to foster a campus climate in which everyone, regardless of sexual orientation or gender identity, will feel safe, supported, respected and affirmed.
