John-Manuel Andriote

John-Manuel Andriote is an author, journalist, speaker and content marketing writer. He has focused on health and medicine, LGBTQ issues and popular culture for more than three decades. In 2014, he also added children's author to his résumé with the publication of Wilhelmina Goes Wandering, based on the true story of a runaway cow in Connecticut.

Andriote began to focus his reporting on the growing HIV-AIDS pandemic while working on a master's degree in journalism at Northwestern University in 1986. Kirkus Reviews hailed his University of Chicago Press book Victory Deferred: How AIDS Changed Gay Life in America as “The most important AIDS chronicle since Randy Shilts’ And the Band Played On.” As one of Americas leading writers on the HIV-AIDS pandemic, hundreds of Andriote's recorded interviews with activists, scientists, and others on the epidemic's frontlines, together with his other research materials comprise the "John-Manuel Andriote Victory Deferred Collection," curated by the Smithsonian's National Museum of American History.

Beginning in the late 1990s, Andriote expanded the scope of his reporting to include other health and medical conditions, writing for national publications that have ranged from The Atlantic to The Washington Post. Andriote specializes in translating medical and scientific information into plain English for non-specialists.

Returning in 2007 from Washington, D.C. to his hometown of Norwich, Connecticut, Andriote taught communication classes for Eastern Connecticut State University, a journalism class for Three Rivers Community College in Norwich, Connecticut, and wrote a weekly column for the daily newspaper, The Norwich Bulletin. Andriote speaks regularly at conferences, universities and author events.

In the summer of 2021, Andriote assumed the role of senior writer for the Winship Cancer Institute of Emory University in Atlanta, Georgia.
