Help Protect the Famous Idaho Potato: Diagnose and Control Late Blight in Your Home Garden
BUL1022
August 1, 2022
Potato and tomato plants are susceptible to late blight, a disease caused by a fungal-like pathogen that caused the Irish Potato Famine of 1845–52. The disease is still with us today and continues to be a major threat worldwide. Although southern Idaho’s usually hot, dry climate interferes with late blight’s development, the disease can spread from a garden to potato fields hundreds of miles away. This four-page bulletin helps growers discourage its seasonal transmission by discussing the symptoms of an outbreak and preventive management strategies. Full-color photography provides clear examples of afflicted plants.
