Census Overview – Data Sources
The data presented come from Banner Student data, maintained by the Registrar. The numbers represent students who were enrolled in an acceptable degree major at Fall Census (October 15) and reporting follows the enrollment reporting guidelines for the IPEDS Fall Enrollment Survey. This means that students enrolled exclusively in professional development, national student exchange, study abroad or co-op courses are excluded. Students only auditing courses are also excluded.
Student FTE was calculated from the number of credit hours in which students are registered at each level. Total credit hours at each level are then divided by the number of credit hours considered full-time for that level. Total Lower Division and Upper Division credit hours are divided by 15, total Graduate credit hours are divided by 12, total Law credit hours are divided by 14 and WWAMI students are counted as 1 FTE each.
Race/Ethnicity is reported only as a percent of the total undergraduate or graduate student enrollment to comply with FERPA guidelines for reporting small numbers.
Retention and Graduation rates are calculated on first-time, full-time new student cohorts who begin in the Fall semester. These students are then followed to see whether they returned to U of I the following Fall semester (first-year retention), and whether they have graduated from U of I within 6 years (graduation rate). The Six-year graduation rate is 150% of the time expected to complete an undergraduate Bachelor-level degree.
