Ed.D. in Curriculum and Instruction with a Music Education Emphasis

Lori Conlon Khan, Ed.D., has been happily involved in music education for 40 years. She earned her Bachelor of Arts in music education, K-12, from Rocky Mountain College in Billings, Montana; Master of Education in integrating the arts from Lesley University, Cambridge Massachusetts; and Doctor of Education degree in curriculum and instruction with a music education emphasis from Boise State University.

Professor Conlon Khan taught general music K-6, including choir and percussion ensemble, for the Boise School District for thirty-two years and during part-time work with Boise Schools, also taught in a Montessori preschool/kindergarten.

In 2009, she received the Red Apple Award for Excellence in Education from the Boise School Board, and in 2010, the Rotary Century Scholars Distinguished Educator Award. At the opposite end of the spectrum, Conlon Khan served as Visiting Music Education Director and Professor at Boise State University, 2015-2017.

She teaches summer courses for the College of Education, Health & Human Sciences at the University of Idaho and is often requested for school district teacher trainings for elementary general music teachers.

Conlon Khan holds certification in all three levels of Orff Schulwerk and two master classes and instructs the Movement sections of summer teacher training courses. She represented Region I on the AOSA national board and as the national AOSA 50th Anniversary co-chair, as well as co-chairing the inaugural Idaho Orff/IMEA Elementary Honor Orff Ensemble, which premiered at the 2020 IMEA conference. Lori has presented workshop sessions at numerous local, state, and national conferences.

Professor Conlon Khan's area of research is in the field of music and reading, creating alternative interventions for struggling readers through musical activities, primarily improving pulse and pitch skills. She and her partner, Mary McGuire, Ph.D., reading specialist, have presented their research findings at various music education and reading workshops, and completed their first book together, Reading with Rhythm.
